Restructuring and Internal Change Recruitment Insights
With news of restructuring and redundancies, these are some personal insights which may be useful for those who have been affected:
1. The language we use is important. People are not made redundant, rather roles are made redundant. This is an important distinction to make as often people will associate their identity and personal worth with their job.
2. Change can be difficult. Even when we understand the reasons and even when those reasons are perfectly logical, change can still bring up all sorts of emotions including fear, uncertainty, and a feeling of not being in control.
Acknowledging these feelings is a good first step and the next step is to get support. An Employee Assistance Program can be a great tool to utilise if it’s available. If the emotions haven’t been processed, they will often show up in other areas and can affect performance in the application and interview process.
3. The same level of preparation is required for an internal process as an external process.
4. Never make an assumption that the panel already know your skills, strengths & achievements because you have worked with them for a number of years. The interview often has a heavy weighting in the overall process and your skills as they align to the role, must be clearly articulated and demonstrated during the interview. Explaining your experience as though you are meeting the panel for the very first time is a good way to approach it.
5. If there are relevant skills and experience that you have gained from roles you have held prior to working for your current organisation, take to take the opportunity to share these during the interview.
6. Navigating these situations can be difficult, seek professional support to pull together your application. Find someone to be your cheerleader & support person through the process.
